Pomona police discovered a large “marijuana grow” when they responded to a man having a medical emergency who later died, officials said Tuesday.

Pomona Police dispatch Monday received a call from a man who explained that he was having trouble breathing, but he did not know his address.

The man’s condition worsened and he was unable to communicate with dispatchers, officials said in a news release.

Police eventually tracked down his location through cellphone towers and GPS coordinates, but the man had already died of an unknown medical issue.

Officers found a handgun near the victim and more than 2,000 marijuana plants being cultivated inside the commercial building, police said.

Officers searched the building and discovered marijuana in five rooms, wooden structures to support the cultivation, numerous gallons of fertilizer grow mix, CO2 tanks, special lighting and irrigation systems.

A check of the electrical consumption showed that the building increased its average use of electricity from about $400 a month to more than $3,000, officials said in the news release.
