A man suspected of stabbing his sister multiple times was shot dead by Culver City police Saturday afternoon — after allegedly charging toward officers while armed with a knife, officials said.
Just before 2 p.m., police got a 911 call about a domestic dispute between a brother and sister, who are ages 30 and 27 respectively, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. It was initially reported at an apartment complex along Culver Boulevard.
But just as officers were responding to the scene, they got another call saying to respond to a neighborhood in the 4100 block of Mentone Avenue instead. There, a man was chasing a woman while armed with a knife, officials said.
One witness described the woman running down the street, covered in blood, while screaming, “My brother is trying to kill me.” It was the same pair of siblings reported to be in a dispute at the Culver Boulevard apartment complex.
When officers got to the scene, the woman was suffering from multiple stab wounds to her upper body, officials said. The siblings had been visiting from the Bay Area and staying at a nearby Airbnb.
Meanwhile, her brother was seen armed with a large kitchen knife as he then charged at the officers, according to police.
When he ran toward them, the officers opened fire — shooting and killing him, officials said. While he was taken to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A large kitchen knife was later recovered from the scene, authorities said.
According to witnesses, the woman appeared alert as she was taken to be hospitalized. But one witness described a grisly scene just as the situation was unfolding.
“We heard somebody yell something. And then we heard about 8 or 9 shots,” Marc Broyard, the witness, told KTLA.
“And after about a minute or so, we came out and peaked around the back end of the building and we saw a man laying in the street,” he said. “This girl was attacked by her own brother — cut her up real bad. She had cuts on her face, her neck, her arms.”
The woman is expected to survive her injuries, authorities said. Her identity and her brother’s have not been released by authorities.
Homicide detectives have since been called to the scene as their investigation continues.
No other details about the shooting have been released.
