A man was arrested early Sunday morning in connection with a two-vehicle crash in Fontana that left several people injured, authorities said.

Mauricio Argueta, 36, was taken into custody at an apartment complex in Rancho Cucamonga “after an exhaustive investigation,” the Fontana Police Department said in a news release. Before being booked, he was treated at a hospital for injuries sustained in the collision.

Argueta was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, online records showed, and was expected to appear in San Bernardino County Superior Court on Tuesday.

The crash occurred about 3:34 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Sierra Avenue and Valley Boulevard (map) in Fontana.

The driver of a black 2006 Ford Escape, which was traveling northbound at 60 mph on Sierra, had ran a red light where the street crosses the 10 Freeway, witnesses told police.

A Nissan Altima had stopped for a red light at Sierra and Valley when it was rear-ended by the Ford, according to the news release.

The occupants of the Nissan included a driver of unknown age and four passengers: two adults, ages 30 and 52; and two children, ages 4 months and 11.

That vehicle’s driver and the children suffered head trauma; the car’s other two passengers complained of pain, authorities said.

As witnesses came to their aid, the driver of the Ford left the scene on foot, Fontana police said.

The Nissan’s occupants, with the exception of the 52-year-old, were transported to a hospital. They remained in critical condition on Sunday.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fontana Police Department.
