A 25-year-old Norwalk man died early Friday after he was struck by a car on the 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park after he got out of another car which had been involved in a minor collision, authorities said.
Vinson Thomasi died at the scene of the 3:05 a.m. collision on the eastbound 10 Freeway, just west of Francisquito Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner officials.
He had been riding as a passenger in a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that became involved in a collision with a 2016 Volkswagen Passat, Officer E. Esparza of the CHP’s Baldwin Park-area office said in a written statement. The Monte Carlo became disabled in the fast lane.
“Sometime after the collision, (Thomasi) exited the 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and was standing outside,” Esparza said.
A 2013 Toyota Pruis being driven by an 18-year-old Ontario woman then approached the scene, officials said. The driver did not see Thomasi standing near the disabled Monte Carlo.
“(The Prius driver) was not able to slow down or stop, and as a result, struck (Thomasi),” according to Esparza.
The Prius then continued moving and struck a 1995 Toyota Camry being driven by a 66-year-old West Covina man.
Paramedics pronounced Thomasi dead at the scene, officials said.
The drivers of the Monte Carlo, the the Camry and the Passat were unhurt, Esparza said. The driver of the Prius was treated after complaining of pain.
Drugs or alcohol were not initially suspected to be factors in the deadly crash, the officer said.
A Sig Alert remain in effect for the eastbound 10 Freeway through about 6:50 a.m.
