A man was struck and killed by a semi truck in downtown Los Angeles early Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Merchant and 7th streets.

The truck was driving north on Merchant and turning on 7th when the pedestrian stepped off the curb and got caught between the rear tires of the semi, Sgt. Roy Escalante said.

The driver pulled over, but the pedestrian had already been dragged about 25 feet, Escalante said.

The victim is described as a white man between 30 to 40 years old.

The Los Angeles Fire Department also responded to the scene.
