A man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Redondo Beach Tuesday, police said.

The crash was reported at the intersection of Francisca Avenue and South Torrance Boulevard, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

A woman, described by police as “elderly” was driving down Torrance Boulevard when she lost control of the her vehicle, struck the man, hit a wall, causing her vehicle to overturn.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, police said.

“It was terrible,” said Carlos Gomez, who witnessed the crash. “To have that right in front of your face, you know, someone just fighting for their life, at their last moment.”

The man apparently was on the sidewalk when he was struck. Neither of the people involved have been indentified.

The crash is under investigation and police. The woman's vehicle remained at the scene for hours before it was removed.

Lt. Joseph Hoffman said there was no indication of the woman having a medical issue or being under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the crash. He said it is too early to determine if the woman will be charged with any crime.

Anyone who might have witnessed the crash can call the Redondo Beach Police Department at 310-379-2477.
