Placentia police on Monday released a booking photo of the suspected drunken driver who struck and killed a 33-year-old mother and her two young daughters on Saturday night.
Nicholas Stephen Muñoz, 27, was detained at the scene of the crash in the 800 block of West La Jolla Street.
Police officers were in the area when they heard the sound of the crash. They responded and found the victims unresponsive in the street.
They were identified as mother Patricia Santiago Venture of Placentia; and her daughters Stephanie Ledezma, 7, and 3-year-old Diana Ledezma.
The family was leaving a nearby child’s birthday party when they were struck, witnesses said.
Dozens of candles, flower and balloons were left at the scene, where mourners prayed and sang over the weekend.
Witnesses told KTLA that Muñoz tried to leave the scene but he was detained by people who had been attending the birthday party.
Muñoz was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence. He is due to be arraigned Tuesday.
He is being held on $1 million bail at the Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana, Orange County inmate records show.
