Thang Van Nguyen, 46, went to the Garden Grove Fire Department around 6:46 a.m. and told officials he had killed his wife, police said.

Officers detained Nguyen, who led police to his home in the 12700 block of Flower Street.

The woman, Huong Nguyen, 44, was found injured after being stabbed multiple times in the head with a meat cleaver, but was still conscious.

She was transported to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition and put in a medically induced coma, police said.

A 7-year-old child witnessed the attack, and a 19-year-old was home, but did not see it. Both were placed in the care of an uncle.

Marital problems prompted the brutal assault, police said, and Nguyen was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
