Police shot and wounded a man in Montebello on Sunday afternoon after they say he accelerated a car toward officers who were investigating a deadly shooting that took place Sunday, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 100 block of South 10th Street, just south of Whittier Boulevard, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau is spearheading the investigation into the shooting, which involved officers from the Montebello Police Department.

Officers were conducting an investigation into the recent killing when they found a “vehicle of interest,” she said in a written statement. Deputies then saw a man get into the car.

“Officers attempted to stop him and he accelerated the vehicle towards the officers,” the deputy said. “At this time, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The suspect was struck in the “lower torso,” treated and released from the hospital later in the day, Navarro-Suarez said.

No officers were hurt during the incident, she added.

Investigators stopped short of labeling the wounded man a suspect in the fatal shooting.

“The suspect is being detained pending further investigation,” according to Navarro-Suarez.

No further details were released.

The police shooting came on the heels of a deadly shooting Saturday afternoon in the 1000 block of South Bluff Road in Montebello, a little under 2 miles away. That shooting claimed the life of a 29-year-old Temple City man.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tips may also be submitted anonymously online to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
