The body of a 38-year-old San Bernardino man was found in a vacant field Monday night, about an hour after a nearby resident heard a single gunshot, authorities said.

Officers were sent to the location, in the 1100 block of East Third Street (map), following the discovery of the body by a passerby at 7:55 p.m., the San Bernardino Police Department said in a news release.

The deceased man, identified as Rayshawn Gardner, had suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper torso, according to authorities. He lived “a few blocks from where the shooting occurred,” the release said.

Area residents often pass through the field on their way to and from stores on Third Street, the Police Department said.

No other information was immediately available. An investigation was underway.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Al Tello at 909-384-5747 or Sgt. Gary Robertson at 909-841-5361.
