A natural gas leak forced evacuations and traffic closures in the Mid-Wilshire area Wednesday morning.

The leak was reported in the 5100 block of West Wilshire Boulevard (map) before 7 a.m., according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A nearby strip mall and business directly in front of the leak were evacuated due to the incident, Stewart said.

Eastbound West Wilshire Boulevard from La Brea Avenue to South Highland Avenue were closed while Southern California Gas Company crews worked to stop the leak, Stewart said.

The leak was stopped by 9:15 a.m. and traffic lanes were expected to reopen, according to an update from Stewart.
