More than seven weeks after Karla Perez had a fatal stroke, doctors successfully delivered her baby boy via cesarean section.

The 22-year-old woman was brain dead after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage, but a medial team at a Nebraska hospital was able to keep her on life support long enough to maintain her pregnancy.

“There is nothing in the books about how to provide medical care in this situation,” said Dr. Todd Lovgren.

Baby Angel was born at 30 weeks and 3 days, weighing 2 pounds, 12.6 ounce, and was in stable condition.

"It’s hard for us to know the long-term outcome due to the rarity of the situation, but we are cautiously optimistic," Dr. Brady Kerr said.
