Authorities were investigating the scene of a crash involving two cars in the Westlake area of Los Angeles that left a pedestrian in critical condition early Sunday morning.

The collision occurred around 2 a.m. on the 2000 block of 8th Street, near the intersection with Alvarado Street, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Mario Cardona.

One vehicle was overturned as a result of the collision's force, Cardona said. A pedestrian who was nearby was also struck by a tire that flew off one of the cars and was in critical condition, officials said.

Footage from the scene showed one of the vehicles appeared to be a two-door sedan, while the other was a larger van or SUV.

The larger car fled the scene, Cardona told KTLA, though video showed it had come to a rest on the sidewalk outside an apartment building.

Witnesses said the vehicle struck the building and sheared a fire hydrant, sending water spewing into the street.

A woman in the two-door car appeared to be OK and was talking to police when KTLA arrived on scene.

It was unclear how many people were in the larger car involved, though police indicated it was more than one.
