One person was dead and a second was transported to the hospital in critical condition Thursday night after a fire broke out amid “pack-rat” conditions at a home in El Monte, fire officials said.

The fire was reported just after 10 p.m. at a home in the 12000 block of Felipe Street, according to Supervisor Kyle Sanford with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

One person was confirmed dead at the scene, Sanford said.

A second victim, described as an elderly woman, was transported to the hospital in critical condition, he said.

A third victim was also hospitalized as a precaution.

The cause of the fire was unknown, but Sanford cited possible “pack-rat” conditions inside the home.
