A man armed with a handgun was shot and wounded by Santa Ana police during an incident on Sunday, a police spokesman said.

Gang officers were on patrol in the 800 block of South Townsend Street about 6:15 p.m. when “they encountered the suspect,” according to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department.

“Something led to an officer-involved shooting. That’s what’s being investigated at this time,” he said.

The confrontation occurred in a location that is considered a “high-density gang area,” Bertagna said.

The man was struck by gunfire and transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in stable condition, Bertagna said.

“His weapon, a handgun, was located here at the scene,” the corporal said.

No officers were hurt in the encounter.

In accordance with protocol, an investigation is being conducted by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Santa Ana police homicide detectives and the department’s internal affairs unit.
