Sheriff’s homicide detectives were responding to the discovery of a human skull in the foothills above Lake View Terrace on Thursday.
The discovery was made about 11:10 a.m. in the 11700 block of Little Tujunga Canyon Road, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced.
A brief news release stated only that detectives were there to “investigate the circumstances surrounding found possible human bones.”
Officials later confirmed a human skull was found, but it is unknown how the skull got to the area. No other bones were found.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed investigators working about 4:30 p.m. in an area of dry brush not far from a dirt road parallel to Little Tujunga Canyon Road.
The site is about a quarter-mile south of a U.S. Forest Service ranger station and district office.
Officials will work to identify the person and how he or she died.
