John Kim said he felt an emptiness as he looked over what was left of his home after the Sand Fire came sweeping down the hillside along Iron Canyon Road.

“I’ve been here almost 14 years,” he said of his now burned down residence.

He and his family found out that their home was destroyed by watching the news.

A body was discovered in a car in the drive way next door to where Kim lives.

He said the couple had a few dogs and the man was returning to the home for the pets.

“He couldn’t make it,” Kim said of the victim. “I feel sad.”

Chris Franken and Sandy Bolik are on vacation in Hawaii and heard their home on Little Tujunga Road had also burned down.

Franken told KTLA that his mother and brother also lost their homes in the fire.

“It’s been overwhelmingly devastating” Franken said.

Their five pigs, however, were rescued after they posted on social media that their pets were in danger.

“I don’t think anything is really going to hit home until we get home, or what’s left of it,” Franken said.
