The mother of a Northern California high school football player said her 19-year-old son was fatally shot during a disagreement over a YouTube music video he posted recently.
On Monday, 23-year-old Fredrick Marshall was scheduled to appear in court in connection with the slaying of his friend, Deston Garrett. On Friday, Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies booked Marshall on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter, according to sheriff’s department records. Marshall has been ordered held on $100,000 bail.
Garrett’s family said the victim was hanging out with Marshall about 9 p.m. on June 9 and listening to music at his family’s home in the 3900 block of 45th Street in South Sacramento when a disagreement erupted over the video.
“My son died over a freaking view on a song on YouTube,” Garrett’s mother, Tanya, told KTXL, a sister station of KTLA.
