A man shot himself in the head after opening fire on a cab driver Wednesday night in Santa Monica, police said.

The incident began when the driver dropped the man and his wife off at their residence in the 800 block of Bay Street shortly before 11:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Rudy Camarena, the public information officer for the Santa Monica Police Department.

A dispute then erupted over the cab fare, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing another police official.

The man said he was going inside to get cash, but instead returned with a gun and opened fire on the taxi driver, according to Camarena.

The driver was not harmed

About 30 minutes later, Santa Monica emergency dispatch was contacted by the man’s wife, who told them her husband was inside their residence and had shot himself, Camarena said.

He was later discovered inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the police sergeant.

Two children, ages 2 and under, were also home at the time of the incident. They were found safe, according to the Times.

The man — who was hospitalized in critical condition — could possibly be arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the newspaper reported.

His wife told police her husband had been intoxicated, according to the Times.
