Family members were asking for the public’s help Thursday in locating Alexis Groomes, a 21-year-old art student who disappeared after leaving her cousin’s home in Gardena on Sunday.

Groomes, who lives on campus at the Art Institute of California in Santa Monica, was spending the weekend with her cousin, family members said.

For some reason, Groomes left the home between 3 and 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

On Monday, Groomes’ bag, purse and cellphone were discovered in Hemingway Park, located about two miles from her cousin’s home, relatives said.

No one has heard from her since.

Groomes was described as an African-American woman, standing 4 foot 11 inches tall and weighing around 110 pounds.

She has short blond hair and was wearing a camo-colored Army jacket when she disappeared.

The case was being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Carson.

KTLA’s Ashley Soley-Cerro contributed to this report.
