8 Injured, Including Baby, After Pursuit of Suspected DUI Driver Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Valinda

At least 8 people were injured Monday evening when a police pursuit of a suspected DUI driver ended in a multi-vehicle crash in Valinda.

Just before 8 p.m., a white Acura was spotted in the area of Holton Street and Avington Avenue by West Covina police officers, according to a release from the West Covina Police Department.

The Acura suddenly sped away and a pursuit was initiated, the release stated.

The officers chased the Acura north on Avington, then west on Francisquito Avenue. When the Acura approached the intersection of Francisquito and Walnut avenues, the car ran a stop sign and collided with a Nissan Maxima and a Ford Expedition, according to police.

A woman and her two daughters, ages 7 years and 8 months old were traveling in the Maxima.  They were all transported to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with serious injuries, the release stated.

Two men and two women in the Expedition were also transported to local hospitals. Their conditions were unknown.

The driver of the Acura was identified as Robert Lopez, 26 of La Puente.  He was arrested and transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, according to the release.

He was expected to be booked on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries and felony evading.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
