The incident was reported just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of G Street and Grove Avenue near Wiltsey Middle School, according to James Q. Hammond, the Ontario-Montclair School District superintendent.

The girl was crossing the street in a crosswalk when she was struck.

A GoFundMe page set up to help the victim’s family identified her as Gretel Torres.

She was taken to a hospital with major injuries and eventually died, Ontario Police Department officials said in a news release.

A male driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with police.

There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.

“Our condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of our student,” Hammond said in a statement.“This is a difficult time for everyone, but I know our students and staff will lean on each other as they fondly remember their beloved classmate. Please join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to our student’s family.”

A vigil will be held for Gretel near the scene of the crash at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
