San Diego police were investigating the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl, whose partially decomposed body was found in a canyon area behind an apartment complex days after she went missing, KTLA sister station KSWB reported on Monday.
The teen’s body was discovered last Wednesday late in the afternoon near the 2900 block of Market Street, San Diego Police Department officials said, according to the local television station.
An autopsy determined the victim died of gunshot wounds to her upper body, San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings told the station. The girl had also been beaten, and her body was found wrapped in a blanket, the station reported.
Her identity has not been formally released by authorities, but family members identified her to KSWB as Anna Hernandez.
A memorial comprised of numerous candles, flowers and balloons was set up near the site where the high school sophomore’s body was discovered.
“I can’t believe this is real, she was only 14,” said Karla Chavez, a close friend of the victim’s.
Family members told the station that Anna’s 12-year-old friend lived at the complex. The friend, they said, was also reported missing.
Both girls were last seen on Nov. 13.
No arrests have been made in the fatal shooting. Homicide detectives were still working “to develop suspect information in this case,” Hastings said.
