A 19-year-old man from Rancho Cucamonga was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman he met on the dating app Tinder, police said Wednesday.
Jake Powers was being interviewed Tuesday in connection with another incident when detectives determined he was involved in an unsolved sexual assault in July, according to a news release from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department.
The alleged assault occurred around 11:50 p.m. in the area of DayCreek Boulevard and Banyan Street on July 8 after Powers and the victim met on Tinder, the release stated.
After a short conversation, both agreed to meet at a residence in Rancho Cucamonga, the 18-year-old victim told KTLA.
The young woman, named Ana, said she uses Tinder to meet people and that Powers seemed nice.
"I trusted him to be a normal human being that I would just like watch a movie with and then talk to and then go home," Ana said.
But as Ana and Powers walked to the rear of the residence, he allegedly threw her to the ground, covered her mouth and sexually assaulted her, police said.
Ana said she was speaking publicly about her assault as a warning to other young women.
"There are so many things that you can do to make yourself safer than I made myself," Ana said.
She urged women to check the other person's profile and other social media accounts before making an impulsive decision to meet them.
Powers was booked on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object.
His bail was set at $250,000.
Detectives believe there may be other victims who met Powers on Tinder or other social media websites.
Anyone with additional information about Powers was urged to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department at 909-477-2800.
