‘Bystander’ motorist killed when vehicle being pursued by authorities crashes in Beverly Grove

Local news

An “bystander” motorist was killed when a vehicle being pursued by authorities crashed in Beverly Grove Tuesday night.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of South Fairfax Avenue and West Third Street.

A vehicle being pursued by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel struck another “bystander” vehicle, killing the driver, the Los Angeles Fire Department stated in a news alert.

The driver killed in the crash was later identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as 37-year-old Jeeves Tangonan of Los Angeles.

The suspect was originally wanted for a traffic violation near North Crescent Heights Boulevard and Melrose Avenue, Sheriff’s Department spokesperson James Nagao said.

At one point during the traffic stop, the suspect attempted to run over a deputy and fled from the scene, Nagao said.

Authorities pursued the suspect’s vehicle for about a mile before it collided with the victim’s vehicle.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital following the crash, according to the Fire Department. There was no immediate word on his or her condition.
