A 27-year-old Van Nuys man was arrested on drug and child endangerment allegations after officers claimed he left his 3-year-old son home alone in order to carry out a suspected drug deal, the Simi Valley Police Department announced on Monday.

Rene Barraza was arrested on April 13 several blocks from his Van Nuys apartment prior to a search warrant being served at his residence, a news release from the department stated.

During his arrest, detectives learned Barraza left his 3-year-old son alone in his apartment. When they arrived, detectives found the toddler awake and sitting on a bed, according to the release.

The investigation revealed that Barraza left his son alone in order to carry out a suspected drug deal, police stated.

The search warrant resulted in the seizure of approximately 60 grams of methamphetamine, 31 grams of heroin, 27 hydrocodone pills and over 80 alprazolam (Xanax) pills, the release stated.

In addition to the drugs, detective said the search also uncovered a handgun and $987 in cash.

The toddler was placed in the care of the County of Los Angeles Department of Children & Family Services.

Barraza was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of child endangerment and numerous drug charges.
