One person suffered serious injuries after a vehicle slammed into a tribal hall building during a funeral in Thermal, causing significant damage Thursday, authorities said.

Firefighters transported eight people to local hospitals after the 5 p.m. crash on the 66000 block of Martinez Road, Cal Fire Riverside said.

Three of those injured suffered moderate injuries and four suffered minor ones, according to Cal Fire.

Video from the scene showed a large law enforcement response outside a building with a gaping hole in one of the walls.

CHP told KESQ that a funeral was being held at the building when the SUV came crashing in. While fire officials previously described the location as a church, the station said it is a tribal hall building used for a variety of events.

A vehicle could be seen all the way inside the damaged structure with piles of chairs pushed up against a wall, photos showed.

The incident also appeared to have caused utility pole to tip over.

It’s unclear what caused the crash and no further details were immediately available.
