Crews shut down a major intersection near the Fashion District in downtown Los Angeles after an old pipe ruptured and caused flooding in the street.
Officials received a call about the water main break on Main Street between 11th Street and Olympic Boulevard at around 5:40 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Surveillance video shows water spewing from the pavement on a sidewalk in front of a shop.
A 126-year-old, 12-inch cast iron main broke and caused the flooding, LADWP spokeswoman Rosalba Santana said.
Around five to seven buildings, including homes, at least one hotel, and other businesses, were affected, the department said. The affected stretch of Main Street, just a few blocks away from The Santee Alley, as well as 11th Street between Los Angeles Street and Broadway will be closed until further notice.
LADWP expects service to be restored at about 1 p.m.
KTLA’s Alberto Mendez contributed to this report.
One lane now open in each direction on Main St. as crews continue repairs from water main break that occurred earlier this morning. 11th St. still closed from Los Angeles St. to Broadway. Thanks to those affected for your patience. <MV>
