A woman in her 80s on Saturday was fatally struck in San Bernardino by a driver who stopped and reported the collision to police, officials said.

Officers responded about 6:30 p.m. to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the 1500 block of North Mount Vernon Avenue, according to a news release from the San Bernardino Police Department.

The victim was walking east across Mount Vernon, outside of a sidewalk, and the vehicle was traveling southbound when the crash occurred, the statement said.

She was transported to Community Hospital of San Bernadino, where she died a short time later. Her name was not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.

The driver, who was in possession of a valid California driver’s license, told officers that he had not seen the woman in time to avoid striking her, police said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to have been a factor in the incident, according to investigators.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 909-384-5664.
