A driver who allegedly struck and killed a woman in an unincorporated area near Whittier and then fled the scene has turned himself in, authorities said Tuesday.

The crash took place near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Inez Street (map) at about 7:25 p.m. Monday, according to Lt. Eric Smitson with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was described as a Hispanic woman in her 80s, according to Officer Polizzi with the California Highway Patrol.

Coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral later identified her as Porfiria Salgado, 83, of Whittier.

The driver who struck Salgado fled the scene following the crash, possibly in a black Nissan that was last seen on Telegraph Road.

The suspected driver then turned himself in sometime overnight, according to Sgt. Gama with the Sheriff’s Department.

KTLA’s Nidia Becerra, Alberto Mendez and Stephen Acosta contributed to this report.
