A woman was hospitalized after being shot by police in Long Beach on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the 1800 block of Cherry Avenue (map) just after 8:15 a.m., according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was allegedly acting strange and talking to herself while walking through the Liberty Hotel complex with a small gun prior to the shooting, a witness said.

The witness, who did not want to be identified, said he heard police tell the woman to drop her gun about three times before three shots were fired.

The woman was struck by the gunfire and taken to a local hospital in unknown condition, according to Lt. Holly Francisco of the Sheriff’s Department.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, Francisco said.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Sheriff’s Homicide detectives were assisting the Signal Hill Police Department in the investigation.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
