A late-night fire Monday at an apartment complex in Long Beach left one woman dead and a man hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The fire was reported about 11:30 p.m. at a multi-unit building on 38th Place in the Belmont Shore neighborhood, the Long Beach Fire Department tweeted.

One unit was heavily involved with fire when crews arrived, Long Beach Fire Department Firefighter Jake Heflin said.

Officials learned that a man had escaped the unit, but a woman was still trapped inside.

Firefighters went in and managed to rescue the woman, but she later died at a hospital, Heflin said.

The victim was only identified as a woman in her 60s.

The victim’s husband was taken to the hospital in moderate condition.

About 50 firefighters responded to the fire. Two units adjacent to the involved apartment sustained water damage during the firefight, Heflin said.

No other injuries were reported.
