A Rancho Cucamonga man was arrested in the death of his 49-year-old daughter after calling to report the killing himself Monday morning, officials said.
Joe Edward Montes, 71, called authorities about 8:30 a.m. and stated that he stabbed his daughter at a home in the 6300 block of Elkridge Place, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Deputies arrived to find 49-year-old Darlene Montes suffering from multiple stab wounds.
She was taken to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, authorities said.
The father remained at the home, where he spoke with deputies before being taken to a sheriff’s station for questioning.
The man was later arrested on suspicion of murder based on his statements and evidence found at the scene, investigators said.
Sgt. Jeff Allison, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman, said the killing happened in a safe neighborhood.
“To hear something like this is pretty unreal,” said Jesse Martinez, who lives in the area.
Aerial video from Sky 5 showed patrol cars surrounding a home with a blood-spattered driveway. The million-dollar home was cordoned off with police tape.
Authorities described the stabbing as an isolated incident.
The homicide remains under investigation.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the victim’s funeral services.
