A woman died, a man was seriously wounded and a suspect was arrested following a stabbing in Pomona on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The stabbing took place just before 1:45 p.m. in the 1300 block of E. Mission Blvd., Pomona Police Department Sgt. Jon Edson told KTLA. Police arrived to find a man and woman suffering from stab wounds to their upper bodies.

The injured man and woman were both taken to hospital, officials said. The woman, described as 49-year-old, died from her injuries a short time later, Sgt. Jon Edson told KTLA. The man, 29, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said there was no obvious motive.

Based on witness accounts, “It looks completely unprovoked,” Edson said. The victims were sitting on a retaining wall when they were attacked.

“The suspect was observed fleeing on foot just prior to officers arriving on scene,” Lt. Marcus Perez said in a written statement. He was initially described as male, with “numerous” tattoos.

An officer spotted a man matching the description in the area, Edson said.

Jose Alfredo Mancinas, 21, of Pomona was booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records.

Evidence linking the suspect to the stabbing was recovered from his person, officials said.

No further details regarding the circumstances of the stabbing were available.

The victims ended up seeking help at a nearby homeless shelter, police said. Initial information from police that the attack had occurred at the shelter was incorrect, officials said.

Bail for Mancinas was set at $2 million pending his initial court appearance, scheduled Tuesday in the Pomona branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court.
