A worker was crushed to death Tuesday afternoon in an accident involving a crane at a construction site in West Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident was reported shortly after 4 p.m. near the intersection of Sunset and La Cienega boulevards, a supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

In what sheriff’s Lt. Vance Duffy described as an “industrial accident,” the worker was crushed between the crane and possibly a trailer. The victim was transported to a hospital and subsequently pronounced dead, Duffy said.

Division of Occupational Safety and Health officials responded to the scene and initiated an investigation.

La Cienega Boulevard had been closed due to construction activities at the location, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The street remained closed Tuesday evening as the Cal/OSHA investigation continued. It was unclear when La Cienega would be reopened.
