An explosion in an electrical box set a man on fire Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley and left him critically injured, authorities said.

A sub-contractor was working near an electrical panel at a commercial building on the 12200 block of Montague Street in Pacoima at about 1 p.m. when the explosion occurred and the man received severe burns, Los Angeles fire officials said.

“Something happened — it’s still unclear as to the exact cause of the explosion — but the panel erupted in flames and an electrical shock went through this individual,” said Capt. Cody Weireter with the L.A. Fire Department.

Employees nearby used about 15 fire extinguishers to douse the flames and pull the victim away from the panel, Weireter said.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the fire captain.

LAFD evacuated the building as Department of Water and Power officials cut the electricity and began investigating.

The company involved is Line 204, which provides sound stages for the film industry.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation.
