Police were searching Monday for a hit-and-run driver who struck a mail carrier in Compton, leaving her critically injured.

Hit-and-run driver strikes mail carrier and second car in Compton before fleeing.

It happened on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sante Fe and Euclid avenues, according to Richard Maher with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mail carrier Laydia Ray was outside her truck when she was struck. The driver also smashed into a second car before he drove off, leaving the 20-year veteran lying in the street, Maher said.

Witnesses called 911 and stayed with Ray until help arrived.

Ray has since undergone two surgeries and is in critical but stable condition, Maher said.
