A mother was in custody early Friday afternoon after four children were killed in an apartment in Tennessee, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to the Greens at Irene apartment complex in Memphis about 12:50 p.m. local time to a report of multiple individuals stabbed, sheriff’s spokesman Earle Farrell told KTLA sister station WREG in an on-air phone interview.

When they arrived, they found four small children had been stabbed to death, according to Farrell. The children have not been identified, but all were believed to be under 6 years old, he said.

“It’s a bad situation,” Farrell told the Memphis-area TV station.

The mother was taken into custody, the sheriff’s spokesman said, adding he was unaware of whether any other suspects have been named in the case.

The woman’s name has not yet been released.

“Our community has suffered an egregious act of evil and tremendous loss today,” Sheriff Bill Oldham said, according to WREG. “One of the most difficult questions in any investigation always is ‘Why?'”

No additional information was immediately released.
