A medical call at Prince’s Paisley Park recording studios outside Minneapolis led to the discovery of the iconic singer, unresponsive in an elevator on Thursday morning.
Authorities responded to a medical call at the estate in Chanhassen at 9:43 a.m. local time, the Carver County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
When deputies and medical personnel arrived, they found an adult male in the elevator. They tried to provide CPR, but the victim could not be revived, the release stated.
Prince Rogers Nelson was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. He was 57.
The death investigation at Paisley Park in Chanhassen was first reported by Minneapolis television station KMSP.
The crime lab and medical examiner both responded, but the identity of the person who died was released for several hours, pending family notification.
Prince had been rushed to the hospital Friday, April 15, after his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois, TMZ reported last week. He was returning from performing in Atlanta and had symptoms of a bad flu, his representative told the celebrity news site.
His plane stopped in Moline, and he was back on board in a few hours.
The Carver County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Officer, were investigating the circumstances of Prince’s death.
A cause of death has not been released.
