ANTIOCH, Calif. (KTLA) — “Hello Kitty” has become an astronaut thanks to the ingenuity of a seventh-grade girl in northern California.

Lauren Rojas released a weather balloon that she built, carrying a platform with a Hello Kitty doll seated inside of a rocket ship.

It was for a school science project studying the effects of altitude on air pressure and temperature.

At the edge of space, where it was 38 degrees below zero, the balloon swelled to 56 times its original size.

The balloon eventually burst, sending Hello Kitty plummeting back to earth.

The rocket was recovered in a tree 47 miles from where it was launched.
