A San Gabriel police officer was recovering Tuesday after being struck by a patrol car while chasing after a man, authorities said.

The incident began at 11:30 p.m. Monday when the officer approached a “suspicious subject” standing next to a motorcycle in the 1900 block of Del Mar Avenue (map), according to San Gabriel Police Department Lt. Quijada.

The man ran away from the officer, who chased after him on foot.

During the foot pursuit, the subject ran past responding officers in a patrol vehicle. The police car ended up crashing into the officer, according to Quijada.

The officer was transported to the hospital for minor hand and foot injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police were still looking for man the officer chased after. He was described as Asian, in his late 20s to 30s, with a long ponytail and wearing a leather jacket, Quijada said.

No further information was available.
