When officers arrived, they found an adult female with a stab wound to the upper body at Orizaba Park near Spaulding Street and Orizaba Avenue (map), a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department said in an email.

The woman, identified as Kellye Taylor, died shortly after being taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Steven Brown, 50, was taken into custody shortly afterward at a shopping center at Anaheim Street and Redondo Avenue, according to Sgt. Aaron Eaton.

Taylor was a teacher at Huntington Academy, a private elementary school, located across from the park.

Police said Taylor and two other teachers were in the park with their students when the attack occurred.

“Several of the other teachers saw what happened and were able to get the students… away from the area,” Eaton said.

Police said Brown was the father of Taylor’s grandchildren.

The suspect did not at any time try to approach the children, attack them or do anything with them,” Eaton said.

No one else was injured.
