Terror in the Sky: Plane Struck by Lightning

IZMIR, TURKEY (CNN) – Lightning hit the engine of a Turkish Airline flight, causing the engine to catch fire.

A passenger caught the frightening incident on camera. It was also captured on video from the ground.

The flight from Istanbul, carrying 114 people, was preparing to land in Izmir when the lighting hit.

The pilot turned on the motor’s own fire extinguisher, declared an emergency and was able to land safely.

Passengers of a Turkish Airlines (THY) flight experienced some of the most scary moments of their lives when their plane was struck by lightning while in the air.

A passenger managed to film the moments before the plane was safely landed.

THY’s Istanbul-Izmir flight was about to descend for landing at Adnan Menderes Airport in Izmir after taking off from Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport at about 11.15pm on Thursday night when a lightning struck the plane.

The lightening strike caused fire in the engine of the plane, but the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely at Adnan Menderes Airport at 12.05am on Friday.

A passenger, Mr. Bertan Atay, managed to catch the moments of horror on his camera before the plane was landed safely. The lights of the aircraft went out after the plane landed at the airport.
