Six weeks after being shot in the face by a gunman, Anaheim police dog Bruno was deemed well enough to go home on Friday, the department announced Wednesday.

A photo posted to the Friends of the Anaheim Police K9 Association’s Facebook Page shows Bruno sitting up following his surgery.

The March 20 shooting shattered Bruno’s jaw and left his lung damaged and a bullet lodged close to his heart.

The 7-year-old German shepherd underwent several surgeries and suffered a few setbacks along the way, but on Wednesday, the Anaheim Police Department announced Bruno was well enough to continue his recovery at home.

Officials were expected to hold a news conference on Friday to discuss Bruno’s release from the Yorba Regional Animal Hospital and the next steps for the K9 as his retirement approaches.
