New images from Mars this week will leave you in awe. It’s like we’re looking at scenes from America’s desert Southwest. Check out the NASA and JPL links to see what NASA describes as “some of the most amazing vistas we have ever seen on Mars.” The images come from the Curiosity Rover. Curiosity’s chief engineer, Rob Manning, is my guest on this week’s podcast.

Manning is actually a man of many hats at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and therefore well-positioned to give us an overview of what’s happening on Mars now and what we can expect in the years ahead. In this podcast, you’ll hear him speak with passion about the discoveries already made on Mars including what appears to be liquid water and evidence that Mars was once habitable. We also discuss the possibility of manned flight to Mars–I was surprised to learn how soon that could happen. And we discuss Andy Weir’s novel “The Martian” and the movie of the same title starring Matt Damon.

I’m a great admirer of the men and women who are exploring space, studying it, and creating the machines and conditions to make it possible. Many of them work right here in Southern California at JPL. That’s where my conversation with Rob Manning takes place.
