California's Democratic U.S. Senate candidates tried to out-progressive each other during the state party convention on Saturday in search of a formal endorsement ahead of the March primary.

U.S. Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, as well as former tech executive Lexi Reese all pleaded for votes from hundreds of party delegates at the California Democratic Party's endorsing convention. They are all vying for the seat now held by Sen. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed when longtime Sen. Dianne Feinstein died in September. Butler is not running for the seat and will step down when her term expires in early 2025.

Several current and former employees of the Sky Terrace restaurant at the W Hollywood, an upscale hotel at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, are coming clean and speaking out about what they say is a rat infestation in some of the eatery's facilities.  

Five cooks, servers and receivers at the rooftop restaurant said they repeatedly reported the persistent vermin problem to managers but felt like their concerns were not taken seriously.

Four qualifying presidential candidates faced each other again, but the GOP’s lead contender was nowhere near the debate stage. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy faced off at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

“We've been preparing for days and days. We've had an entire team here working on all the research for weeks,” said debate moderator Elizabeth Vargas. She points out it's one of the candidates’ final chances to pitch themselves to a national audience before January’s Iowa caucus.

Three people are dead and another is hospitalized after a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, law enforcement confirmed Wednesday. During a press conference, authorities said the suspected shooter engaged in a shootout with two campus officers who responded to the scene. The alleged shooter, whose identity has not yet been released, was struck.

Less than two hours after the first shots rang out, law enforcement said the suspected shooter was dead and there was no further threat to the community. While police said they knew the suspect’s identity, they did not release that information, saying they were awaiting notification of his next-of-kin. However, 8 News Now Investigators sources say the suspect is an older white man in his 60s. Those sources said the shooter was a former college professor who recently applied for a job at the university and was denied. He may have also had a connection to a person who works on campus.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Wednesday said he will depart the House at the end of the year. “I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” McCarthy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.
