A family is sharing their grief after a beloved father of three was killed in a Northridge strip mall shooting in April.

On April 15, 38-year-old Juan Lopez was hired as a painter to cover up gang graffiti on the exterior wall of Northridge Ice Cream.

While Juan was painting, a gunman drove up, stepped out while holding an “Uzi” type semi-automatic handgun and opened fire, striking Juan multiple times in the chest, said LAPD. Three other men who were standing nearby were also shot, police said.

Juan was pronounced dead at the scene. A father of three children, Juan was trying to earn extra money to buy his daughter a birthday cake when he was fatally shot that day.

Teachers are planning at least two protests after the Temecula Valley School Board in California voted to ban a new social studies curriculum over its inclusion of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk.

The board president was heard during the meeting referring to Milk as a “pedophile.”

At Saticoy Elementary School in North Hollywood, controversy over a scheduled Pride event came to a head Friday morning when parents on both sides of the issue squared off in dueling demonstrations that turned violent.

Supporters and opponents of a Pride Month assembly gathered outside the school with city and school police stepping in to separate the sides.

Officers were on the scene to "facilitate a peaceful and lawful exercise of constitutional rights," the Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter.

California’s ambitious and expensive plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfills may itself be headed for the trash heap.
