The AARP has selected Don Schoendorfer as one of its 2024 AARP Purpose Prize Award recipients. The one-of-a-kind national award honors people aged 50-plus who have proven that they are using their knowledge and life experience to make a difference. Five AARP Purpose Prize Winners who have founded a non-profit will receive $50,000 for their organization. In addition, 10 AARP Purpose Prize Fellows and their organizations will be recognized with an award of $10,000. All award recipients will also receive a year of technical support to help broaden the scope of their organization’s work.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Wednesday said he will depart the House at the end of the year. “I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” McCarthy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office. The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”

Four qualifying presidential candidates will face each other again, but the GOP’s lead contender will be nowhere near the debate stage. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will face off at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

“We've been preparing for days and days. We've had an entire team here working on all the research for weeks,” said debate moderator Elizabeth Vargas. She points out it's one of the candidates’ final chances to pitch themselves to a national audience before January’s Iowa caucus.

Three people are dead and another is hospitalized after a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, law enforcement confirmed Wednesday. During a press conference, authorities said the suspected shooter engaged in a shootout with two campus officers who responded to the scene. The alleged shooter, whose identity has not yet been released, was struck.

Less than two hours after the first shots rang out, law enforcement said the suspected shooter was dead and there was no further threat to the community. While police said they knew the suspect’s identity, they did not release that information, saying they were awaiting notification of his next-of-kin. However, 8 News Now Investigators sources say the suspect is an older white man in his 60s. Those sources said the shooter was a former college professor who recently applied for a job at the university and was denied. He may have also had a connection to a person who works on campus.
