California won’t be giving unemployment checks to workers on strike, with Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoing a bill Saturday that had been inspired by high-profile work stoppages in Hollywood and the hotel industry.

Newsom, a Democrat, says he supports workers and often benefits from campaign contributions from labor unions. But he said he vetoed this bill because the fund the state uses to pay unemployment benefits will be nearly $20 billion in debt by the end of the year. “Now is not the time to increase costs or incur this sizable debt,” Newsom wrote in a veto message.

Twelve cities in Los Angeles County have filed a lawsuit Friday against the new zero-bail policy set to take effect on Oct. 1. The policy would allow some criminal suspects with non-violent or non-serious crimes to be cited and released when, previously, they would have been held on bond.

The new Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols are designed to rely less on the arrestee's ability to pay and more on their risk to the public or victim, Los Angeles County Superior Court stated following a July decision to institute the system. Court papers submitted to the L.A. County Superior Court on behalf of the dozen cities said the new zero-bail policy is a threat to public safety.

A military flight carrying Senator Dianne Feinstein’s body arrived in San Francisco on Saturday night. Onboard the flight was Fenstein’s daughter, her Chief of Staff and her longtime colleague, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.

The flight landed at the San Francisco International Airport around 6 p.m. and was followed by a procession through the city. Feinstein died on Sept. 29 at age 90 and was the longest-serving female U.S. senator in history.

Congress has averted a shutdown with just hours to spare, capping a dramatic day that started with a lapse in government funding appearing all but inevitable. The Senate voted 88-9 to pass a “clean” continuing resolution (CR) that funds the government at current levels through Nov. 17 and gives the Biden administration $16 billion it requested to assist victims of natural disasters.

The House had earlier passed the measure in a bipartisan 335-91 vote. The CR notably lacks any funding for Ukraine, spending cuts or border policy changes. The bill now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature before midnight, with both sides claiming victory.
