Californians will have a good view of the annular solar eclipse, aka a "ring of fire" eclipse, when it happens later this month. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon, while at its farthest point from Earth, passes between our planet and the sun.
The dazzling event causes a dark circle that partially covers the sun but leaves an orange, fiery glow around the shadowed edges of the moon. This is set to occur on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 9:13 a.m. PDT, and your ability to view the event will depend on the weather and your location.

Kaiser Permanente patients may be affected as over 75,000 workers could go on strike if negotiations over labor contracts for unionized workers are not finalized on Tuesday. Discussions between SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West and the healthcare provider have been unsuccessful so far as workers say they’re struggling with a staffing crisis that is affecting the quality of patient care.
Workers are asking for across-the-board pay increases, retiree medical plans and protections against subcontracting and outsourcing. Workers across the nation said they’re ready to walk off the job for three days from Oct. 4-6 starting Wednesday at 6 a.m. in what has been described as potentially the largest healthcare worker strike in U.S. history.

The House on Tuesday voted to remove Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as Speaker, a never-before-seen historic vote that leaves the lower chamber of Congress in chaos.
The mutiny, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), came days after McCarthy averted a government shutdown by putting a stopgap measure on the floor that garnered Democratic support — a move that infuriated hardline Republicans. In the final 216-210 vote, seven Republicans joined Gaetz to unseat McCarthy.
Every Democrat in the chamber also voted to boot McCarthy, refusing to help protect him from his unruly conference. McCarthy said he would give Democrats nothing if they were to vote to help him. The House is now in uncharted territory, with House members and aides unsure what will happen next.

At least four people were wounded, none critically, in a shooting at Morgan State University in Baltimore on Tuesday, according to authorities, who urged students to take shelter on the campus of the historically Black college.
The Baltimore Police Department initially said officers were on the scene for an “active shooter situation.” Police kept the campus on lockdown for hours and provided little information about their investigation. The address given for the shooting appeared to match a residential building that’s on the same block as a city police station.
